Hearth and Hamlet Early Game Walkthrough
First-hour priorities — feed the camp, cut the timber, unlock the next tier.
This Early Game walkthrough is a first-hour plan for Hearth and Hamlet, the cozy incremental citybuilder planned for Steam on August 19, 2026 (Windows + SteamOS/Linux, single-player). Use it in the demo or on launch day, but remember demo values may differ from the full release.
Pair this page with Getting Started for orientation and How to Play for loop theory. Keep Resources and Controls open as references.
First-hour goals
By the end of hour one you want:
- Stable food income that supports early population growth.
- A reliable wood surplus for construction.
- At least one fishing and one woodcutter (or equivalent early specialist) assignment online.
- Population climbing without constant starvation scares.
- A meaningful research unlock that opens the next building or system tier.
If you achieve those five, you are playing the early game correctly — even if your pixel skyline still looks like a campsite.
Minutes 0–10: Bootstrap food and wood
Start at the hearth. Use early gather inputs (click / hold LMB or Space) to create an initial buffer. Prioritize:
- Food first if population is already ticking up.
- Wood first if you cannot afford the next workplace.
- Otherwise split attention roughly evenly until workers exist.
Do not sprint toward decorative goals. Early buildings that enable jobs and storage beat castles you cannot staff.
Check Controls if an input feels wrong on your keyboard or mouse layout.
Minutes 10–25: Hire and specialize
As soon as hiring is available, convert manual labor into assigned labor.
Fishing / food specialists
Food is the soft gate on everything else. Fishing (or the demo’s equivalent food job) should be staffed before you chase luxury production. Signs you under-invested in food:
- population stalls,
- happiness dips,
- you fear clicking “grow” buttons.
Woodcutters
Woodcutters turn the construction lane green. Without wood, research goals that require new buildings become paper promises. Keep a buffer equal to your next two planned structures whenever possible.
Population etiquette
Grow population when food is comfortable, not when you are already rationing. Incremental citybuilders punish greedy growth harder than slow growth.
Minutes 25–40: Buildings that unlock jobs
Spend wood (and other early materials) on workplaces and capacity. Ask one question before each build: Does this create a job, a storage fix, or a research dependency I need now?
Useful early categories (names may vary by build):
- shelter / tents for population footing,
- food workplaces,
- wood workplaces,
- storage or stockpile improvements,
- the research-enabling structure if gated.
Confirm details on Buildings. Avoid emptying every resource for a single prestige project.
Minutes 40–55: Research unlock focus
Research is the early-game power spike. Pick an unlock that multiplies what you already do:
- better food tools or buildings,
- better wood throughput,
- worker capacity,
- the first policy / trade / magic gate if your food economy is already healthy.
A good heuristic: unlock the node that removes the pain you felt in the last fifteen minutes. If you were wood-starved, do not unlock a shiny magic vanity node first.
While research runs, rebalance idle workers. Watching the bar fill is not a reason to ignore a starving food pile.
Minutes 55–70: Stabilize and glance upward
Use the end of the hour to stabilize ratios:
- food trending up,
- wood covering the next build,
- population growing on purpose,
- research either finishing or queued,
- a mental note of when policies, trade, magic, and guards will matter.
Optional peeks (only if stable):
- Policies for upcoming happiness/tax levers,
- Trade for gold beyond local terrain,
- Magic for alchemy / academy identity,
- Defend Raids so the first raid is not a surprise.
If you are on the demo specifically, reset expectations with the Demo Guide.
Early-game worker ratio mindset
Exact numbers will change between demo and the August 19, 2026 release, so use ratios as a mindset:
- Food-heavy when growing population.
- Wood-heavy when a construction backlog exists.
- Split when both buffers look healthy and research needs time.
- Never zero a critical job because you panic-chased gold or magic.
Write your favorite split down. That note is more valuable than copying someone else’s screenshot from a different build.
Mistakes that waste the first hour
- Clicking for thirty minutes after workers exist.
- Growing population on an empty pantry.
- Building prestige without workplaces.
- Ignoring research until the map feels “done.”
- Opening trade/magic while food is critical.
- Assuming multiplayer advice or code lists exist — they do not belong here.

After hour one
Hour two and beyond should feel like repeating a smarter loop: rebalance workers, build the bottleneck fix, research the next multiplier, then gradually introduce governance, trade, magic, and defense. The early game is won when automation is trustworthy and research is permanently advancing — not when you own the tallest unfinished tower.
Play calm, keep the pantry honest, and let the hamlet earn its skyline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What should I prioritize in the first hour?
Stabilize food and wood, assign fishing and woodcutter-style jobs, grow population only with surplus, and complete a useful research unlock.
When should I stop manual clicking?
As soon as workers can cover gathering roles. Early LMB/Space input is a bootstrap, not the long-term plan.
What research should I take first?
Pick the unlock that fixes your current bottleneck—usually food, wood, capacity, or the next building tier you already need.
Does this walkthrough assume the full release is out?
No. It works for the demo and for launch planning. The full game is planned for August 19, 2026, and numbers may change.
Where do I go after the early game?
Layer in policies and happiness, then Trade, Magic, and Defend Raids once food and wood stay stable.
